Today there are hundreds if not thousands of skin care products on the market.  However, some of them contain harmful chemicals that may in fact damage your skin rather than help it.  Herbal skin care products on the other hand are all natural solutions which use herbs to help fight off the effects of aging, restore moisture to your skin, and help give you a great looking complexion all without the use of harmful chemical and additives.

Herbal skin care is part of herbal medicine.  Unlike some skin care products that are marketed as “natural,” herbal skin care products are made with plant and herbal extracts.  Humans from around the world have been using indigenous plants for medicinal and healing purposes for thousands of years.  Chemically based skin care may have potentially negative side effects, whereas herbal products are made from natural substances and are far less likely to result in harmful side effects and can help to produce healthy, great looking skin.

There are many herbs which can help to promote healthy skin and a great looking complexion.  Aloe vera, which has been used traditionally to help heal wounds and burns, is a great moisturizer which helps to prevent your skin from chapping and getting dried out.  Comfrey leaves can also act as a moisturizer and help to alleviate wrinkling.  To help prevent or eradicate skin wrinkling blackberry leaf can be used.  Chamomile makes for a good cleanser, cornflower is an excellent toner and lavender flower can be used as a tonic.  Chickweed can be effective against skin allergies.  Lemon balm makes a good cleanser and toner.  Peppermint can help to restore your skin’s elasticity and to tone the tissues.

For a dry complexion, herbs can help to moisturize your skin.  Essential oils from sandalwood, rosewood and palmarosa can be used to stimulate the production of oil in dry skin.  Rosemary and peppermint can help to improve circulation as well as help to increase oil production in your skin.  Elder flowers can also help to improve your complexion’s texture and tone.

An oily complexion can make your face appear to be shiny.  You don’t ever want to stop the production of oil from occurring in your skin completely, but you might want to try using some herbs that can help to slow down its production.  Herbs such as basil, cedarwood, eucalyptus, lemon grass, sage, and yarrow can help to normalize oil glands that are overactive.
